Israel blocks search for missing Palestinians in tunnel attack

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) GAZA, Nov 2 (KUNA) -- The Palestinian civil defense directorate on Thursday confirmed that the Israeli authorities prevented rescue teams from searching for the people who went missing after the Israeli airstrike on a tunnel between Gaza Strip and Israel.

The air attack, that took place on Monday to the east of Palestinian city of Khan Yunis, claimed seven lives, including five members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement and two members of Hamas movement, and injured 13 others.

After five days of procrastination, the Israeli occupation authorities have formally informed the directorate, through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), that the targeted area is inaccessible to rescue teams, according to a press release by the directorate.

The Israeli occupation authorities attached a condition for permitting the search and rescue operation that the Palestinian groups produce information on the whereabouts of Israeli soldiers who were captured in the 2014 Israeli military campaign on Gaza.

Such conditions contravene the international conventions and humanitarian laws, the statement stressed, urging the competent international organizations to press the Israeli occupation authorities into allowing the search without further delay. (end) wab.gb
