Jordan - Panic buying drives prices up, ministry warns

(MENAFN - Jordan News Agency) The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply on Sunday assured that food staples are in sufficient supply in the local market ahead of the fasting month of Ramadan and cautioned that any buying frenzy could send prices soaring.

Spokesman Yanal Barmawi said the ministry's teams had started an intensive monitoring campaign across different markets in the Kingdom's governorates to ensure that merchants abide by the industry and trade rules and regulations to guard against runaway prices.

He urged the public not to rush to buy foodstuff "to avoid (causing) imbalances in the market" and to cooperate with the ministry and file any complaints concerning the market via its phone number, facebook page or local dailies and news websites.

Barmawi said the ministry had put forward its market oversight plan for the holy month and Eid Al Fitr holidays, vowing to take legal action against violators.
