Rangers rough up Avalanche in New York




(MENAFN - Kora) Ryan Callahan scored a double in the opening period to set up the Rangers' victory, while New York's captain also helped create his team's fifth goal in a strong performance at Madison Square Garden



The win took the Rangers three points clear in second in the Eastern Conference's Metropolitan division but they remain 15 adrift of leaders the Pittsburgh Penguins



Callahan has been linked with a move away from the Rangers but he shook off the pressure of an unsettled future to score the opening two goals of the game on Tuesday



The Avalanche responded early in the second period when Gabriel Landeskog hit the back of the net but Anton Stralman rebuilt the hosts' two-goal lead less than a minute later



The Rangers effectively wrapped up victory in the second minute of the third period with Derick Brassard, while Callahan linked with Carl Hagelin to set up Brad Richards for the home side's last goal with less than two minutes remaining



In Missouri, Kyle Turris scored the decisive goal as the Ottawa Senators overcome the St Louis Blues in a shootout



St Louis led 3-1 with a period to play but goals from Milan Michalek, Turris and Jason Spezza put Ottawa ahead with over 10 minutes remaining in the third stanza



Jordan Leopold equalised for the home team at 4-4, forcing overtime, and after a scoreless additional period, a shootout was required



The first three attempts found the net, giving the Blues the upper hand in the shootout, but after a failure from each team, Stephane Da Costa dragged the Senators level



The shootout remained tied for the next three attempts before Turris beat St Louis goaltender Jaroslav Halak with a 33-foot shot



The Boston Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 to move six points clear at the top of the East's Atlantic division, after the second-placed Tampa Bay Lightning fell 2-1 to the Minnesota Wild



The Montreal Canadiens moved within three points of the Lightning with a 2-0 triumph over the Calgary Flames



In other results, the New York Islanders edged out the Washington Capitals 1-0, the Florida Panthers had little trouble accounting for the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1, the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 and the Dallas Stars overcame the Phoenix Coyotes 3-1
