Jordan- ICT integration projects compete for EU funding

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) The European Union (EU) is currently considering funding several projects to integrate ICT in different sectors in the Kingdom such as energy, water and tourism. These projects are being developed as part of the Jordan Europe Wide Enhanced research Links in ICT (JEWEL) project, which is being implemented by the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and funded by the EU. The 36-month project aims at building strategic partnerships between Europe and Jordan in the thematic priority ICT and at "integrating Jordan into the European research area", said Abdul Rjoub, director of the JEWEL project. He noted that JEWEL, which started 18 months ago, is helping Jordanian educators and researchers with ideas for applying ICT solutions in high-priority sectors to develop their ideas into project proposals and submit them to the EU for financing. "Currently we have eight major proposals, in different areas of priority to the Kingdom, waiting to be funded by the EU with a total value of JD24 million," Rjoub told The Jordan Times on the sidelines of the "ICT Industry-Academia Bridge the Gap" event held on Sunday in Amman. Although the project is being implemented at JUST, he added, other Jordanian universities can participate and submit proposals and research papers for guidance. JEWEL chose which projects to help develop based on the Kingdom's needs, after conducting a study in cooperation with the EU, according to Rjoub. They include projects in tourism, water and irrigation and nanotechnology.
