Carles Puigdemont to seek his options in Belgium

(MENAFN) Carles Puigdemont, dismissed Catalan President, has took off to Belgium, as his attorney, Paul Bekaert has confirmed. However, the lawyer has declared that Puigdemont did not go into hiding nor did he confirm if he was seeking asylum.

Chief prosecutor of Spain has requested rebellion charges to be issued against him along with other organizers of Catalonia's banned independence referendum. Replacing dismissed officials, on Monday the Spanish central government has taken full charge of Catalonia.

Mr. Bekaert confirmed that Mr. Puigdemont currently resides in the Brussels, Belgian capital; he also informed Flemish public radio that "he has full rights to be here, there is nothing against him at this moment". Moreover, when asked about the Catalan leader's intention of seeking asylum he said "we're keeping all options open - nothing has been decided."
