Russia vetoes UNSC resolution on using chemical arms in Syria

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) NEW YORK, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- Russia on Monday vetoed a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council extending investigations into employment of chemical arms in Syria.

Russian delegate Vasily Nebenzya said during the UNSC session that Moscow was awaiting a report by the UN investigation panel to discuss it before casting its vote.

Moscow disapproves the proposed resolution, he said. Meanwhile, two permanent members of the UNSC opposed to the draft resolution and two others abstained.

The US delegate expressed regret that Russia used the veto power.

The council earlier turned down a Russian request to delay the session on extending the investigation into usage of chemical arms in Syria in November. (end) sf.rk
