Amman, Oct. 18 (Petra)--Prime Minister, Hani al-Mulki, on Wednesday, received Governor General of Australia, Peter Cosgrove, and discussed with him means to forge closer bilateral ties for the interest of the two countries and peoples.

In the meeting, they also reviewed the latest regional and international developments, including the Palestinian issue, the situation in Syria and Iraq, and the war on terrorism.

The prime minister said the central issue in the Middle East is the Palestinian issue and resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution is a prerequisite for achieving security and stability in the region.

He briefed Governor Cosgrove on the repercussions of the Syrian crisis on Jordan, which is hosting about 1.3 million refugees, which also has put pressure on infrastructure services, particularly education, health and water, in light of the lack of the international community's support for the Kingdom to shoulder these burdens.

The premier Jordan was one of the first countries that called for a political, not a military, solution to Syrian crisis, noting that the Kingdom is making every effort to restore security and stability in Syria, Iraq and the region.

On terrorism, al-Mulki underlined Jordan's efforts in combating terrorism within a holistic approach.

Governor Cosgrove for his part, voiced pride in the friendly ties between Jordan and Australia and said his country is looking forward to promoting bilateral cooperation and joint coordination between the two countries on all issues of common concern.

He also said he understood burdens Jordan is bearing due to the situation in the Middle East.

Officials from both countries attended the meeting.
