New Amman mayor pledges 'fair and responsible' governance

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — Newly appointed Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh said the capital is facing challenges in terms of public transport, traffic and environment, adding that decisions to tackle these challenges will be announced before the end of this year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Shawarbeh thanked his majesty King Abdullah for appointing him as Amman mayor on Sunday, stressing that he will work 'responsibly' alongside Greater Amman Municipality's (GAM) council, to serve the capital 'fairly and comprehensively'.

He stressed that the municipality will deal responsibly with the issues it encounters in a way that best serves the city and the citizens' public good, according to Petra.

The new mayor said GAM is a 'strong institution' with designed plans and programmes, which has proved its ability to conduct quality procedures and implementing programmes in the last five months.

GAM is currently working on automating these programmes to facilitate services for citizens and investors, and help speed the decision-making process. E-services will also help in achieving the highest levels of transparency, he stated.

Shawarbeh received several current and former officials who came to congratulate him on his appointment as mayor of the capital.
