Puerto Princesa City Palawan Philippines - Everyone has a bucket list of places they just have to see before they… well kick the bucket. Let's face it most of the places on those lists are canyons and caverns national parks and natural wonders the world over. Even though it can boast a little of all of those aspects the Puerto Princesa Underground River is not often found on the list of places everyone wants to see.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park located in the Philippines is the jewel of Puerto Princesa City. One of the New 7 Wonders of Nature this 8.2 Kilometer river snakes its way underneath a mountain range through the St. Paul Underground River Cave before popping out in the South China Sea. Said to be the longest navigable underground river in the world the Puerto Princesa is a gold mine of biodiversity housing 800 plant species 300 types of trees 195 bird species 30 mammals 19 reptiles and 8 different kinds of bats.

Most visitors to the National Park choose the Puerto Princesa Underground River Package Tour a guided tour down the river and through the cave system with an optional stop at Ugong Rock. The tour showcases lush forests mountains of limestone mountains draped in dense forest and other such features all before you even reach the destination. And if you choose to visit Ugong Rock on your tour (although not all guides provide this option) you'll be in for quite the adventure. Ugong Rock meaning humming rock is a limestone formation which produces ‘humming' sounds around the caves when tapped upon. Make no mistake this side trip requires a bit of climbing and spelunking and is not for the faint of heart.

“Every part of the tour was worth the trip we made” claimed Sierra Carmine a visitor from the states. “Everything was awe-inspiring but the underground river was quite literally jaw dropping. It's definitely earned its spot on the list of Natural Wonders.”

The tour does come with its dangers (you have to keep your mouth closed or risk bat poop falling from the sky) but the pros certainly make up for them. There are some genuinely funny boatmen giving the underground tours and it's worth it to get a picture of the wide eyed stares of your companions. But if you go go to the river go for the wonders of nature go to the Puerto Princesa Underground River.
