Qatar- Russia Confirms Foreign Minister Going to New York for Syria Talks

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Moscow December 16 (QNA) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will participate in talks on the Syria conflict with his US counterpart Friday in New York Russia's Foreign Ministry confirmed Wednesday.

Russia wants the upcoming meeting to help set a date for the beginning of negotiations between the Syrian government and the opposition to try to bring peace to the country Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said."Of course we would like to reach an agreement as soon as possible" Zakharova said according to the Interfax news agency. "As everyone understands this is a very complicated issue and unfortunately reaching a solution is taking longer than we would like." Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin hosted US Secretary of State John Kerry in Moscow Tuesday for extensive talks that focused on the Syria conflict.

Lavrov said after the meeting that Russia and the United States would continue their dialogue on a ministerial level Friday in New York.(QNA)
