Nepal- Four killed as rockslide hits bus

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) At least four people have died when a rockslide slammed into a passenger bus in quake-devastated central Nepal, police said yesterday.

Security forces used metal cutters to slice through the mangled wreckage of the bus, crushed by a boulder that rolled down a hill in Nuwakot, one of the districts that suffered heavy damage when an earthquake hit the Himalayan nation in April.

"We understand that around a dozen passengers were travelling in the bus, we have rescued eight people, including five injured persons," said Arun Prasad Paudel, district police chief.

"We have pulled out four bodies, including that of the driver, we don't think any more people are trapped inside," said Paudel.

More than 8,800 people died when a 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on April 25, followed by a massive aftershock on May 12, which together destroyed nearly 600,000 homes, leaving thousands in desperate need of food, clean water and shelter.

The UN says some 2.8mn people still require humanitarian aid, with delivery of relief supplies to mountainous villages expected to suffer a serious blow amid fears that monsoon rains will trigger landslides.
