Israeli army mum about reported Syria airstrikes

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Israel's army has yet to comment on reports of its warplanes having carried out air raids on missile launch pads in the Qalamun region between the borders of Lebanon and Syria.

Israeli army radio said that troops in the country's northern region were on high alert, especially after thwarting an attempted bombing in the Golan Heights on the Syrian border.

Late Sunday, media reports emerged that fighter jets believed to be Israeli carried out raids on missile launch pads belonging to the Syrian regime and Hezbollah in Mount Qalamun, north of Damascus.

The raids have resulted in a number of deaths and injuries, the reports said, without determining their numbers.

Israeli security sources were quoted by Israeli radio as suggesting that the Syrian opposition is the one behind the attacks on the Qalamun region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, lauded the "alertness of the Israeli soldiers, who acted quickly and with precision."

In January, Israeli fighter jets reportedly launched a series of airstrikes at a Syrian army post in the Golan Heights in response to two rockets fried from Syria into the Israeli-held sector of the region.

For over two years, Hezbollah has been openly engaged in the Syrian conflict, fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Israel annexed 1,200 square miles of the Syrian Golan Heights following the 1967 Arab-Israeli War in a move never recognized by the international community.
