Minister of Interior, UN official discuss cooperation


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Minister of Interior, Hussein Al-Majali, on Tuesday stressed the importance of striking a balance between the security of the country and its citizens economic, social, political and intellectual property rights, which is the basis for the government work to preserve human rights and wage a fight against extremism and terrorism.

Al-Majali made the remarks upon receiving the representative of the United Nations Human Rights Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa, Abdel Salam Sidahmed.

He said that achieving justice among various components of the society is a major and fundamental factor in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Al-Majali stressed that the security of the country and its citizens is above any consideration and is not debatable under the constitution, noting that maintaining national security requires the government to take a lot of regulatory and security measures necessary to achieve this goal, especially in light of regional turmoil.

The minister added that human rights and freedoms in Jordan are protected by the constitution and laws, along with the Royal directives to successive governments to achieve the highest degree of integrity and transparency in various state agencies dealing with freedom of opinion and expression and preserving human rights and democratic gains.

The UN official said that his visit to Jordan aims to discuss issues related to human rights, and consult with Jordanian officials in this area, especially the Ministry of Interior, Public Security Department and the National Center for Human Rights.

He expressed his office's readiness to provide technical support, assistance and training to those responsible for applying human rights in Jordan.
