Kerry discusses NATO, counterterrorism with Polish FM

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Secretary of State John Kerry hosted his Polish counterpart Grzegorz Schetyna for bilateral talks Wednesday, and hailed the country as a "strong, stalwart advocate for freedom and of democracy" in the wake of the attacks in Paris.

Both senior diplomats expressed strong support, condolences, and condemnation of what Kerry described as a "vicious act of violence" at the offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Kerry said the Obama Administration is "delighted to have (Polish) support and to work with them in their commitment to Ukraine, to the freedom and sovereignty of that nation, to the rule of law that has stood us so well in all of our global affairs that was defined by World War II, in which Poland paid such a price for freedom." Kerry also hailed "the very robust economic relationship that we share, the investment in defense modernization, (and) a commitment to NATO," adding that the US reaffirms its commitment "to our NATO obligations and to the important relationship between Poland and the United States with respect to the rule of law." On the economic front, Kerry noted "Poland's strong commitment to the Trans-Atlantic Trade Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is such a key component of our future in terms of jobs and our economies." For his part, Schetyna said he and Kerry discussed "our fight against terrorists and terrorism," and that "Warsaw and Washington are intensely cooperating" on several fronts.

"Washington can count on Warsaw, and I'm confident that Warsaw can count on Washington also," Schetyna concluded.
