Emails jolt Clinton, again

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Republican National Convention in Cleveland ran into a controversy at the very start, giving nominee Donald Trump a tough time as he grappled with attacks from within and outside his polarised party. The democratic convention has beaten the Republican conclave in the scandal stakes as it has ploughed into a seemingly bigger scandal even before it begins. Thousands of emails leaked by the whistleblowing site WikiLeaks have set the cat among the pigeons at a time the US election race is increasingly turning decisive. The convention opens in Philadelphia today with Hillary Clinton";s running mate, who has just been appointed, to be thrust into the limelight.

The leaked emails show that the Democratic National Committee is heavily biased towards Clinton and wanted to throw out her closest rival and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders one way or the other earlier in the race. One Committee member is quoted wondering whether Sanders"; religious beliefs can be used to dislodge him, questioning if the senator is an atheist.

The leaked emails have the potential to hit Hillary";s campaign hard especially after she was shown to be neck and neck with Trump in the campaign that is getting grittier by the day. Trump and his campaign mates have already labelled Clinton and her new running mate Tim Kaine — crooked Hillary and corrupt Kaine. The presumptive Democratic nominee wasn";t even completely out of the shadow of an earlier email controversy dogging her when she has been hit by another. Hillary was accused of using a private email server installed at her home for official communication much of which was classified. She was able to extricate herself from the controversy after a probe recently decided not to charge her with wrongdoing. And now another email scandal has mounted an assault on the Democratic campaign.

Sanders, sounding hurt after the remarks reached the public domain, said the emails proved what he knew was true: The DNC planned to support Clinton from the beginning.

Trying not to sound shocked, he admitted to being disappointed and called for the resignation of Chairwoman Rep Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

The latest revelations come as a disappointment also for Clinton who would have expected a smooth convention after a bruising campaign with the bellicose Trump. But that was not to be. And now the former secretary of state would have to steel herself for delegates"; piercing questions in Philadelphia.

One convention has been rocked while the other is set to be jolted. There is no end to action in this presidential campaign.
