The 704-passenger Adonia cruise ship pulled out of the port in the afternoon and was accompanied by a large police force and the Coast Guard who were present in the water and in the air CNBC reported.

Americans are still not permitted to visit Cuba as tourists unless they qualify for one of 12 exemptions such as being a part of a "people-to-people" or "cultural exchange" program.

Passengers "will have free time and be able to go on your own a bit so I'm not sure it will feel that different" from a full-fledged leisure cruise Carnival CEO Arnold Donald told CNBC. (end) ak.gb
