ISC tennis tournament: Murali and Subash capture crowns

R Murali and Subash Pillai won titles at the annual tennis tournament organised by the Indian Social Club (ISC) Muscat on Tuesday.

Murali won the veterans' singles and Subash captured the men's singles title. Murali the No 2 seed scored a hard-fought 6-4 3-611-9 victory to upset top seed Mohan Kannan in the final. Mohan drew first blood and led 3-0 before Murali bounced back and broke Mohan in the fourth game and reeled four games in a row and broke again to win the first set.

Mohan achieved the first break in the third game of the second set and controlled the tempo. Although Murali broke back Mohan was up to the task broke again in the seventh game and served out the set for one-all.

Subash Pillai

The third set tie-breaker was tense. Mohan raced to a 6-1 lead when Murali staged a rearguard action to level at seven-all. Scores went neck and neck until nine-all when a cross-court by Murali earned him match-point. Mohan was serving to save the title but double-faulted to hand the title to Murali. Teenagers ruled the court in the men's singles event as Subash and Yash Tanna battled it out in the final before Subash lifted the title with a 6-4 6-1 victory.
