Saudi Arabia It Will not Change Position on Syria, Foreign Minister Says


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia Adel bin Abdullah Al Jubair said Monday that his country's position on the crisis in Syria, particularly towards Bashar Al Assad.

The Foreign Minister added that their position on a resolution to the crisis would be based on Geneva 1. The agreement is to hold a transitional government comprised of the Syrian regime and the opposition who prepare for new elections after the resignation of Al Assad. They will also oversee the writing of a new constitution.

The statement came during a joint press conference held with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Sochi. Al Jubair highlighted that Saudi Arabia does not envision any role for Al Assad in the future of Syria. He also revealed that the Saudi administration have made its position clear from Russia's military operation in Syria. He added that the Russian administration confirmed the target of those military operations were ISIS.
