Jordan- FM meets Russian Federal Council Chairwoman


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs, Nasser Judeh, on Tuesday, discussed with Chairwoman of the Russian Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, and discussed with her Jordanian-Russian ties and ways to cement cooperation in various fields.

Judeh stressed the importance of the Jordanian-Russian Joint Commission meeting to be held soon and its role in promoting mutual cooperation, especially in economic and trade fields.

The minister spoke about the Syrian crisis and said His Majesty King Abdullah II, since the beginning of the crisis, warned that "it will take many years and the only solution is a political one," pointing out that the majority of countries is currently calling for a political solution to the crisis.

He briefed the Russian official on the Syrian crisis repercussions on Jordan, as the Kingdom hosts 1.4 million Syrian refugees, stressing that no country in the world can bear a 21 percent increase of the size of its population in just two years.

Meanwhile, Judeh said the world must not disregard the Palestinian issue as Middle East core case, stressing that "Israeli violations in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa mosque are condemned and Israel is responsible under international law as an occupying power to commit to the status quo in Jerusalem." The Russian official praised the distinct relationship between the two countries and their leaders.

She expressed her admiration for Jordan's ability to maintain security and stability in spite of the surrounding regional conditions.

She confirmed Russia's position that there is no alternative to a political solution to the Syrian crisis, noting that her country does not have any political goals in Syria, but to fight terror organizations, particularly Daesh.

Matviyenko expressed understanding of the size of burdens Jordan has to shoulder as a result of receivnig waves of freugees from Palestine, Syria and Iraq, stressing that the Kingdom is one of the most affected countries by the human crisis arising from the region turbulence.
