(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah has stressed the need to prioritise the right to education as millions of children around the world are still deprived of it.
The minister was speaking during a high-level working breakfast organised in New York by Qatar's permanent delegate to the UN. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The foreign minister said providing good education is facing many challenges, some of which are armed struggles in some regions and natural disasters. He referred to the increased number of attacks on schools, teachers and students and expressed his sorrow on the phenomena.
Former British prime minister Gordon Brown, who is the UN Special Envoy on Global Education and former Portuguese president and UN High Representative for the Alliance of Civilisation Jorge Sampaio attended the event.
The participants shed light on some of the challenges that face education across the globe as well as the achievements made over the past years, particularly since the UN General Assembly Resolution on the Right to Education in Emergencies. Qatar was one of the main countries that worked on the resolution.
