OIC must intensify efforts to face challenges: Qatar

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) must intensify its efforts in the face of challenges faced by people in Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Libya and Yemen as well to fight the growing threat of terrorism, Qatar said on Friday.
The call came in a statement by Assistant Foreign Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Rumaihi at the annual meeting of foreign ministers of member countries. The meeting was held in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The assistant foreign minister said the Israeli aggression at Al Aqsa mosque aims at creating a new situation that divides the mosque. He added that such actions were a provocation to the billion-plus Muslims around the world.
The statement said while Qatar condemns the Israeli actions, the country will work with the international community in getting peace negotiations back on track with the aim of establishing an independent Palestinian state with East-Jerusalem as its capital.
On the Syrian refugee crisis, the statement said that the Islamic world must work on helping the Syrian people and maintain the unity of the country. The statement also stressed that the violations of the Syrian regime must end.
On Yemen, the statement conveyed Qatar's full commitment to helping the legitimate authority regain power in the country and reach an agreement between the parties involved based on the GCC initiative and UN Security Council's resolution 2216.
In another statement, Qatar expressed the hope that different groups in Libya will have a successful dialogue in co-operation with UN Special Representative Bernandino Lyon.
The statement was issued by HE Foreign Minister Assistant for International Co-operation Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdul Rahman bin Jassim al-Thani.
He stressed that the agreement of Libyans on a national reconciliation government will be the only way for the country to return as an active member of the international community. He praised the efforts of the UN Special Representative in bringing together the different Libyan groups, which will help form a shared vision and eventually an end to the division.
