Oman- MoM resolves strike at Oman Mining Company

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Manpower (MoM) resolved issues raised by 150 striking workers of the Oman Mining Company after a meeting on Sunday.

The workers resumed work on Monday after a consensus was reached regarding increase in the payment of annual increment and maintaining health and safety standards in the company. The company was paying five to ten per cent of the basic salary as annual increment since 2011. The dispute began in January this year when the company reduced it to three per cent.

Talking to Muscat Daily Ahmed Hamad al Muqbali president of the Trade Union of Oman Mining Company said that the workers had announced their intention to strike in March. 'Eight months of negotiations with MoM and the company made no headway. We had two meetings while company representatives didn't attend the third scheduled earlier this month.

'The strike was however postponed after the Industrial Union and the General Federation of Oman Trade Unions recommended negotiations with the company. The strike was staged by the workers after negotiations with the company yielded no result.'

Regarding the health and safety issue Muqbali said 'MoM's health and safety department found that the company was not undertaking proper maintenance of its equipment thus exposing the workers to danger. The company failed to act on warnings.'
