Japan concerned over Yemen's situation


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Japan expressed deep concern on Monday over the humanitarian situation in Yemen, which the United Nations declared a Level-3 humanitarian emergency last week, the highest on its scale.

"Japan is also concerned that many civilians, including internally displaced persons, in Yemen who are placed in a difficult and dangerous situation," Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Yasuhisa Kawamura said in a statement. "Japan is concerned that despite various efforts by the international community including the UN, a cease-fire agreement has not been realized yet, and that fighting in Yemen has intensified, leading to the disruption of import/distribution of food and fuel," Kawamura said.

He also affirmed that Tokyo supports the call by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for an immediate cessation of hostilities during the holy month of Ramadan. Japan has provided food aid amounting to about USD 15.5 million to Yemen since last October, and in response to the further deterioration of the humanitarian situation, provided an emergency grant aid amounting to USD 2.4 million to the Yemeni refugees in neighboring countries and its internally displaced persons this May. "Japan has an intention to continue its assistance in future, but we request all the parties to ensure access to Yemen of the humanitarian aid workers," the spokesman added.
