France condemns ongoing attacks in South Sudan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) France on Thursday condemned another attack against the UN protection force in South Sudan and also praised the adoption of UN Security Council sanctions against the two warring factions in that country.

The latest attack against the UN force took place in the Malakal region on Wednesday and one UN soldier was killed and several wounded, according to a statement from the French Foreign Ministry.

"France condemns the attack against the civilian protection base," Paris said, adding that it wanted an enquiry to establish who was responsible. Several other attacks have taken place against civilians in recent days, particularly against women and children.

The French authorities have said that these attacks "could constitute a war
crime" and those behind them must be brought to justice.

Separately, Paris praised the work in the UN Security Council to take punitive, financial and other measures against members of the warring parties who are refusing to dialogue to get respect for a cease-fire and earlier peace accords.

"France welcomes the decision of the Security Council to adopt targeted sanctions against six military leaders from both sides in South Sudan who represent a threat to peace and regional security," the statement said in reference to a decision in New York on Wednesday. (End)
