GCC seeks "normal" relations with Iran - Qatari FM

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Qatari Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Attiyah said Tuesday the GCC consultative summit has affirmed desire to establish "normal" relations with Iran on basis of good neighborliness and respect of sovereignty.

Al-Attiyah, at a news conference following the one-day summit, said the GCC leaders affirmed importance of the peaceful nature of the Iranian nuclear program and clearing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

But, he added, countries in the region should have the right to own nuclear energy for peaceful means.

Al-Attiyah welcomed the forthcoming summit between the GCC leaders and US President Barack Obama in Camp David to discuss security and stability in the region in a "transparent manner," including the Syrian crisis, Palestinian cause and the Iranian nuclear agreement.

Al-Attiyah said French President Francois Hollande's attendance of the consultative summit was a strong sign of support of the GCC countries' measures in Yemen.
