EU does not recognize Nagorno-Karabakh elections

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The EU Friday said that it "does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework" of the parliamentary elections to be held in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh on May 3.

"These procedures cannot prejudice the determination of the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh or impact on the negotiation process," said Catherine Ray, spokesperson for EU High Representative Federica Mogherini, in a statement.

She underlined the EU's firm support to the efforts by Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group progress beyond the status quo and bring about comprehensive peace negotiations.

The EU stands ready to further support efforts, aimed at early peaceful resolution of the conflict, she added.

Nagorno-Karabakh is a region in Azerbaijan but populated mainly by ethnic Armenians.

In 1991, Nagorno-Karabakh declared itself an independent state, escalating the conflict into a war. A Russian-brokered ceasefire was signed in 1994. Since then the Minsk Group, which includes France, Russia and the US, is trying to resolve the conflict through negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. (end)
