'Step into Health' campaign starts today

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Aspetar is launching its 2015 Step into Health (SIH) campaign today in malls with the aim of helping people in Qatar remain fit despite the summer heat.

By offering opportunities for physical activities performed indoors, this year's campaign promises to motivate people to walk more and experience the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

The objective is to engage people in Qatar in a self-managed, life-long programme based on a moderate amount of daily healthy activity.

The campaign, being launched through Aspetar's Healthy Lifestyle Programme, aims to encourage each person to walk 10,000 steps or more a day in a non-competitive, recreational and social way.

Under the campaign, Health Promoting Malls will offer people a range of opportunities for physical activities indoors as well as a comfortable walking environment.

According to global and local standards, the minimum daily requirement of physical activity is at least 30 minutes, as one single period or isolated as three periods of ten minutes. According to the individual's target (e.g. weight loss), the total weekly workout period can be doubled.

The SIH team will continue managing health events for the public in collaboration with Hyatt Plaza Mall today, at the City Centre on May 2, Ezdan Mall on May 16 and Lagoona Mall on June 13.

The SIH team already supports Hyatt Plaza Walking Club, created in 2013, by designating the last Saturday of each month a day of health activities, with participation by Aspire Active instructors and health measurements done by Aspetar nurses. The Ezdan Mall Walking Club, also supported by SIH, will be launched on May 16 at the public health event.

All activities will be overseen by health professionals and supported by student volunteers from the Sport Science Department of Qatar University , all dedicated to increasing the number of participants desiring to improve their lifestyle through physical activity.
