(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Winners of the Qatar University (QU) Sixth Gasna Competition were announced at a closing ceremony recently.
The competition, which is an initiative organised annually by the organisation's Gas Processing Center (GPC), drew the participation from more than 300 students and teachers from 100 independent and international schools, and included over 80 projects.
This year's competition was sponsored by Qapco, Dolphin Energy Limited, ExxonMobil Qatar, RasGas, ConocoPhillips Qatar and QatarGas.
Attending the ceremony were QU College of Engineering Dean Dr Rashid Alammari, GPC Director Dr Mohammed Almarri, ExxonMobil Qatar Environmental Researcher Nayla Al Naema, Dolphin Energy Limited Director of Public and Government Relations Ajlan Eid Al Enezi, ConocoPhillips Research Scientist Eman Al Shamari, Qapco Head of Academic Affairs Department Abdulrahman Sultan Aldarweesh, RasGas Process Engineer Hamad Al Bunain, and QatarGas Corporate Social Responsibility Officer Rand Agha.
Winners in the First Category (KG to Grade 4) were Halimah Al Saadiah Independent School for Girls (1st), Newton International School-D-Ring (2nd), and Hajar Primary Independent School for Girls (3rd).
The Second Category (Grades 5 and 6) winners were Brooq Primary Independent School for Girls (1st), Jawaan Bin Jassim Model Independent School for Boys (2nd), and Al Khanssa Primary School for Girls the (3rd).
Al Yarmook Preparatory Independent School for Boys won first place in the Third Category (Grades 7-9) followed by Osama bin Zaid Preparatory Independent School for Boys (2nd), and Umm Maabad Preparatory School for Girls (3rd).
The Fourth Category (Grades 10-12) winners were Ali Bin Jassim Bin Mohammed Al Thani Secondary for Boys (1st), Al Khor Prep/Sec Independent School for Girls (2nd), and Umm Ayman Independent Secondary School for Girls (3rd).
The winners of the Incentive Award were Al Falah Primary Independent School for Girls (KG to Grade 4), Al Huda Primary Independent School for Girls (Grades 5 and 6), Abdurrahman Bin Jassim Preparatory Independent School for Boys (Grades 7-9), and Amna Bint Wahab Independent Secondary School for Girls (Grades 10-12).
In his remarks, Dr Rashid Alammari said: "This national competition is one of several community service activities and outreach programmes conducted by the College that engage students on innovation and creativity in science and engineering. It highlights QU's vision to become a model national university in the region and promote a knowledge-based economy. These young students are the future generation of leaders and professionals, and it is critical that they start owning their future today."
Qapco Vice Chairman and CEO Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla said: "We need the youth of today to be excited about engineering. We need them to learn and understand more about what makes Qatar such a great industrial nation. This competition will help to realise this dream and to encourage the next generation of engineers and scientists to take up our vision and make it a reality. Qapco is proud to be associated with Gasna, a great initiative that aims to increase the children's understanding about the importance of gas and gas processing to the economy and the future of Qatar."
