Qatar- RAEL volunteers, workers honoured

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) recognised outstanding achievements of Education City's low-skilled workers and volunteer student tutors who participated in ROTA's Adult English Literacy (RAEL) Programme.

The programme, introduced in 2009, aims to develop English literacy and language abilities of low-income workers in Qatar.

Its key feature is to offer opportunities for young people to participate in experiential service-learning and develop skills and knowledge as RAEL Literacy Trainers and Champions.

The event at Hamad Bin Khalifa University's Student Centre celebrated achievements of students and migrant workers who received awards and certificates for participating in the 2014/2015 programme.

Last year, 120 volunteer student tutors taught 250 workers at Education City. About 200 university students are teaching basic, intermediate and advanced level English to 300 workers within Education City and Ashghal organisations, including cleaners, pantry staff and support staff benefitting from improved English language skills.

The programme provided an educational opportunity for workers who may have had limited schooling in their countries, and a learning opportunity for local students and volunteers, who gained new teaching skills along with an understanding of communities and their needs.

Rasmeya Al Jamali, Community Development Specialist and Project Manager, ROTA', said: "Alongside Qatar Foundation, ROTA works towards building stronger communities through initiatives that impact the youth and people in need.

"The programme has proved to be a very effective way of supporting and empowering local low-income workers to achieve their aspirations and goals at work, in addition to building capacities of volunteers who dedicate time and effort to this humanitarian initiative.

"It is time to show workers and student tutors how much we appreciate their efforts, dedication and determination."

In the current academic year, ROTA has implemented the programme in partnership with Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar; Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar; Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar; Northwestern University in Qatar; and Doha Expressway (CH2M HILL), a project of Ashgal.
