Ban concerned over civilian casualties in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is deeply concerned over reports of numerous civilian casualties resulting from ongoing military operations in Yemen.

In a statement released by his press office on Tuesday, Ban referred to the airstrike on the Al-Mazraq camp for internally-displaced persons in Harad, north Yemen, and the attacks against several hospitals in the southern city of Dhale.

These attacks left dozens dead and injured, among them children, the statement said.

Therefore, Ban reminded all parties involved in military operations in Yemen of their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians.

This includes the strict adherence to the principles of proportionality, distinction, and precaution, the statement added.

He also stressed that hospitals and other medical installations have a special protected status under international law.

Nevertheless, the Secretary General reiterated his firm belief in the necessity to resolve the conflict through peaceful means.
