A noble gesture by UAE's Sheikh Hamdan: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The decision of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council to donate his Dubai World Cup prize of US$6 million to the Dubai Autism Centre is highly laudable and inspiring, said The Gulf Today, the Sharjah-based daily, in an editorial.

Prince Bishop, Sheikh Hamdan's winning horse, scored a historic victory on Saturday when it won the $10 million Dubai World Cup at Meydan racecourse. The horse won the Gold Cup and a cash prize of $6 million in the world's richest race.

Founded in 2001, the Dubai Autism Centre is the largest, most innovative and comprehensive non-profit organisation in the UAE, serving children with autism spectrum disorders.

Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as autism spectrum disorders, and can be characterised by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and non-verbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests.

"I am pleased to announce that I have donated the Dubai World Cup prize of 6 million Dollars to the Dubai Autism Centre. I am optimistic for what the Dubai Autism Centre will achieve socially and medically for children with autism," Sheikh Hamdan has written on his Twitter feed.

The newspaper said, "While Sheikh Hamdan has achieved several successes in the international equestrian field, his sense of dedication and commitment to excellence has surely enriched his position as Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council."

Sheikh Hamdan is also the Chairman of the Dubai Autism Centre, and his wholehearted support has enabled the centre to mobilise significant contributions from various segments of society, which helped immensely in improving the lives of children with autism.

The editorial went on to say, "There can be no doubt that Sheikh Hamdan's initiatives in the social and humanitarian fields have made him a source of inspiration for the young generation not only in the UAE, but all over the world."

"His popularity can also be gauged from the fact that the number of his followers on social media platforms exceeded 3.7 million last month," it added.

In conclusion, the daily quoted the Crown Prince of Dubai's words which sum up his vision: "The source of our concern for special needs people is to give each individual in our society the attention and care they deserve."

World Autism Awareness Day will be marked on Thursday.
