Qatar to Participate in Forty-Sixth Session of UN Statistical Commission


(MENAFN- QNA) Qatar will participate in the 46th session of the Statistical Commission scheduled to be held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York from 3 to 6 March . The Qatar's delegation is headed by HE Minister of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) Dr. Saleh bin Mohammed Al Nabit, .

HE. the Minister will hold several important meetings with representatives of international and regional organizations to discuss means of enhancing cooperation, coordination and exchange experiences and learning from successful experiences in the development of official statistics systems in the country.

He will also hold a meeting with representatives of "Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21)" as HE the Minister Dr. Saleh is member of its Executive Committee. He will hold several meetings with representatives of the GCC Statistical Centre, International Monetary Fund (IMF) , The United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the World Bank (WB), The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), The Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and a number of heads of delegations of world countries.

The session’s agenda includes important issues that will pave the way for declaration of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda, which represents a new road map for the sustainable development of the countries of the world. This year 2015, the set of eight global development targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) come to an end. The current UN development agenda is centered on the MDGs that were officially established following the Millennium Summit of the UN in 2000.

The session will discuss a number of papers pertaining to the launch of data revolution, which aims to upgrade statistical systems in member countries to meet the needs data users through regular delivery of statistical information necessary for formulating policies that respond to the requirements of national and international development, and produce and communicate relevant indicators for monitoring the implementation of the development goals, regularly and in a timely manner.

The participants will also discuss reports on the development and integration of household surveys in the post-2015 development era: issues and recommendations towards a shared agenda, particularly reports on health, refugees and internally displaced persons statistics, building businesses statistical records, and the methodology of implementation of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics and the National Accounts. The World Bank will provide its report on the evaluation of the 2011 round of the International Comparison Programme.

Among other important issues to be discussed in the session are; upgrading national statistical systems to help produce more effective, efficient and internationally coordinated official statistics, at the lowest possible cost, sustainable and in line with the strategic direction of the global statistical system.

During the session, the participants will be asked to adopt the new review of the principles and recommendations of implementation of the 2010 World Population and Housing Census Programme, which will guide all member states in the implementation after five years. The report also describes the preparatory activities for the 2020.
