macklemore’s hometown of seattle may be best-known for grunge but the quick-witted rapper is bringing his city’s hip-hop stylings to the world.
the 30-year-old born ben haggerty has become something of an unlikely chart-topper since the independent release of his 2012 debut album the heist as a duo with producer ryan lewis.
the duo personally selected the winning entryby dubai resident joshua allison who will receive a signed and framed copy of his work to keep.
the record which has sold more than a million copies in the states proved a slippery beast to define - switching from daft humour to socially charged commentary and back again picking up four grammys at this year’s ceremony along the way.
macklemore & ryan lewis hit yas island’s du arena this weekend where they will rattle off chart hits such as can’t hold us white walls and of course the ubiquitous thrift shop.
the duo who have covered more than 277000 miles on their world tour already will be joined in abu dhabi by miami rap king rick ross and british grime legend wiley.

after initially meeting in 2006 ryan lewis first helped macklemore in a promotional capacity as a photographer. it wasn’t until two years later that they started work on their first musical project together the vs. ep.
born in march 1988 ryan is almost five years younger than macklemore.
after developing a problem with drugs and alcohol macklemore went to rehab in august 2008 and has remained sober ever since.

after winning the grammy for best rap album in january macklemore posted to instagram a text message he had sent fellow nominee kendrick lamar. in the message he apologised and claimed the los angeles rapper should have won for his acclaimed good kid m.a.a.d. city record. drake another nominee for nothing was the same derided the move in a rolling stone interview calling it as “wack as f***”.
as a teenager macklemore attended seattle’s garfield high school - which boasts alumni including jimi hendrix and quincy jones.
wanz (aka michael wansley) who sings the vocal hook on thrift shop was working as a full-time software engineer when he recorded his part in the song which went on to sell seven million copies. the 52-year-old has since toured with macklemore & ryan lewis and recorded his own material.
