Ghani meets Zadran elders, vows projects for Paktia

(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has said several development projects would be implemented in southeastern Paktia province to improve people€™s living standard, his office said on Tuesday.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said the President met with elders, youths and civil society activists of the Zadran tribe from Paktia province late on Monday.

The elders spoke on behalf of others and said the Zadran tribe had always offered sacrifices to protect and defend their homeland but they had been forgotten in terms of privileges, the statement said.

However, they praised efforts of the High Peace Council (HPC) and said the Zadran tribe had been able to contribute to the intra-Afghan negotiations and play a considerable role in this regard.

Ghani also hailed the tribe and said Paktia people always defended their country and recorded victories in the history of Afghanistan.

Ghani said it was the time to resolve Paktia problems and execute development projects there to bring positive changes in people lives.

He added Afghanistan exported pine nuts worth $6 million annually, something previously done by Pakistan.

Two factories would be established in Khost and Paktia provinces to process pine nuts because it could double the exports, the president announced.

He explained there was a special plan at hand to convert Paktia into an industrialized and economic zone. Development programs were also planned for border districts, he added.
