(MENAFN- The Arabian Post) What's the most frustrating part of owning a smartphone? A lot of users will point first to the meager battery life and the need to recharge more than once a day in some cases. A phone now available for pre-order, however, claims that one charge of its battery can last more than two weeks.
China-based smartphone maker Oukitel has just announced a new Android-based smartphone called the K10000 (pictured) that it said can be used from 10 to 15 days without a recharge.
The phone features a 10,000-mAh battery. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active comes with a 3,500-mAh battery that tends to last about 109 hours, or four and a half days, making it the longest-lasting widely available smartphone, according to tests performed by GSMarena.com. HTC's Titan II smartphone, the lowest-ranked device in GSMarena's battery test, sports a 1,730-mAh battery that lasts only 23 hours.
Use Level Matters
The secret to the K10000's battery longevity is the mid-range components that were chosen because they don't overtax the battery. The K10000 runs on the Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system and is powered by a 1 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735 processor that's supported by 2 GB of RAM.
The phone has a 5.5-inch display with 720p resolution, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 16 GB of storage and microSD support. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G. Even with the hefty battery and larger-than-average display, the K100000 weighs just 184 grams, making it lighter than many smartphones.
It remains to be seen whether the Oukitel phone really offers two weeks of power during routine use. Typically, a 3,000-mAh battery has a range of runtimes that averages about a day and a half, including Web browsing, texting, video playback and gaming. It seems that different phones have different battery runtimes depending on what other features/components they have, e.g., the Galaxy S6 Active. However, if a 3,000-mAH battery lasts a day and a half on average, presumably a 10,000-mAh battery would run down after about five days of comparable use.
No Hardship
We contacted Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research, to get his thoughts on the new phone. He told us that it doesn't seem likely that the device will find a huge market among users that care only about battery life. As long as the battery can get users through the day, any extra battery life is going to be a luxury.
"If all other features are equal, a standout feature like better battery life might push someone to buy that device, but people look at the experience they're going to get from a phone in totality," said Dawson. "And the reality is that charging a phone every day is something we're all getting pretty used to at this point, and no great hardship."
The Oukitel K10000 is available for pre-order now from online retailer GearBest for $240 unlocked with no contract. The phones are scheduled to begin shipping in January.
