Businesses win prestigious British Safety Council awards for health, safety and environmental management excellence

(MENAFNEditorial) The British Safety Council has announced the winners of this year's Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards for exemplary management of health, safety and environmental risks by businesses around the world. From Doha to Darlington, Birmingham to Bangalore, the 61 Sword of Honour and eight Globe of Honour winning companies have demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel a proven track record of excellence in managing risks to workers' health and safety and/or to the environment from the organisation's activities.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, said: "On behalf of the trustees and staff of the British Safety Council I would like to congratulate those winning organisations and their staff for their huge commitment in seeking to be the best, recognising their effort expended in keeping their workplaces safe and healthy and minimising risks to the environment from their organisations' day-to-day activities.

"I am delighted by the range of organisations who have won and by the different regions of the world they represent. The Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour awards shine a light on organisations that are at the forefront of achieving safe, healthy and sustainable workplace and business practices. It is an opportunity to celebrate their success and encourage other organisations everywhere to follow their lead as we know the business case for good health and safety is strong.

"The more we can do to promote these awards and the winners and learn from them, the more we can protect both workers and the environment, which benefits business overall."

The winning organisations (listed below) came from a wide range of industry sectors in the UK, mainland Europe, India and the Middle East, including construction, education and training, energy generation and distribution, food and drink, leisure, logistics, manufacturing, major hazards, motor vehicle manufacture, retail and transport. Winning organisations included Aston Martin Lagonda, Britvic Soft Drinks, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Qatargas, Tata Chemicals of India and United Biscuits.
The British Safety Council would particularly like to pay tribute to those seven organisations that won the double – both the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour. These were: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority; OSI Food Solutions – Scunthorpe; Qatargas Operating Company Limited – Commercial & Shipping Group – Shipping Department; Unipart Aftermarket Logistics – Baginton A; Unipart Logistics – Cowley; Unipart Technology Logistics – Baginton B; and United Biscuits (UK) Ltd.

The 2015 awards mark the 36th consecutive year the British Safety Council has awarded the Sword of Honour for health and safety management excellence, and the sixth year of awarding the Globe of Honour for excellence in environmental management.

The winners had achieved the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council's independent Five Star health and safety and/or environmental management audits in the period 1 August 2014 – 31 July 2015. They have also demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel that they have a proven track record and a culture of best practice for excellence in health and safety or environmental management that runs throughout the business – from the shopfloor to the boardroom.

The winning organisations will be invited to a luncheon at Drapers' Hall in the City of London on Friday 27 November to celebrate and share their success. This event will be an enjoyable way to meet others of a similar mind and exchange experiences and knowledge about how best to keep workers safe and healthy and ensure sustainable business practices.
