Call To 'Rectify' Status Of Syrians In Kuwait

(MENAFN- Arab Times) MP Talal Al-Jalaal has stressed the need to quickly rectify the status of Syrians residing in the State of Kuwait and ease procedures for them to obtain a residence permit, in view of the recent news on the large number of Syrians seeking refuge in European countries.

He said Kuwait must do whatever it can to help the Syrians, considering the hardships they endure and the risks they take for a chance to live peacefully. He explained most of the Syrians in Kuwait are suffering in terms of renewing and acquiring a residence permit due to the difficulty in renewing their passports since the Syrian Embassy has been shut down for over a year now. He pointed out these Syrians are not refugees; hence, the need to rectify their status.

He added that receiving Syrian refugees at this point in time might be a difficult matter to address, but "we can ease the suffering of those already in the country." For this reason, the MP called on concerned authorities and the minister of interior to address the matter in a humanitarian and compassionate manner and to cancel the penalty fees imposed on them for late renewals due to their inability to renew their passports. He clarified, "If we make this happen, Syrian residents will be able to financially help their friends and relatives who are seeking refuge in European countries, so Kuwait will contribute to such a good cause.

Furthermore, MP Majed Al-Mutairi criticized the statement of his colleague - MP Saleh Ashour who claimed that those accused of involvement in the Abdally terrorist cell were tortured. He asserted, "Such practice is a sign of tyranny which is the opposite of what Kuwait is known for - a country which has always been an advocate of humanitarian principles." He said it is sad to see an MP, who represents the people, stand up and utter such an insensitive statement. He then voiced objection to his colleague's claim for it is not only an aggravating statement, it is also false.

Also commenting on the case, MP Mohammed Al-Jabri stated there is no doubt that the actions of suspects affiliated to the terrorist cell are considered heinous crimes and they are currently facing the consequences, but some people are using religion and other sectarian statements to rile up the public. He said such acts are nothing but an attempt to derail investigations, a matter that should not be taken lightly and must be addressed quickly. He asserted the Kuwaiti public is more educated and they know better, indicating he believes it is a national obligation to stand against such acts and prevent the enemy from wreaking havoc.

On the other hand, MP Adel Al-Jarallah expressed his gratitude to Minister of Interior Sheikh Mohammed Al-Khaled and his team as they made environment protection a reality, taking into consideration the difficulty in passing the legislation for around 10 years. He added the law was one of the priorities of the Public Utilities Committee because it contains numerous regulations on protecting the environment. He also thanked the engineers of the Environment Public Authority for their cooperation with the committee in drafting and finalizing the legislation.

The MP went on to affirm that the implementation of the Environment Protection Law is regarded as a significant leap for Kuwait, stating similar laws are enforced in numerous developed countries which apply their own environmental regulations on individuals and institutions. He concluded, "Protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility."
