Jordan chairs Security Council session on violence against women

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Jordan, the current president of the United Nations Security Council, on Wednesday, chaired a council's session on violence against women by terrorist groups and some states in conflict.

The council looked at a detailed report on violence and sexual violence in 2014, especially in the Middle East and North Africa. The report said the year saw a rise in the number of civilians who fell victims to violence and sexual assaults.

The report also indicated that violence was widely used to terrorize civilians and recruit youths to join terrorist groups. Jordan's permanent envoy to the UN, Dina Kawar, who chaired the session, said the kingdom has been exerting tireless efforts to provide a maximum degree of protection and care for victims of violence from the Syrian refugees.

She stressed Jordan's condemnation of any attempt by any individual or party to exploit the refugees, especially women and girls, or exposing them risk of crime because of their circumstances.

The envoy highlighted steps taken by Jordan to combat violence against women and said the kingdom has opened the door wide for women engagement in counter-violence endeavors worldwide.
