Riyadh governor honors countries participating in 2014 Gulf Cup


(MENAFN- Arab News) RIYADH: Riyadh Gov. Prince Turki bin Abdullah honored on Monday night amid glittering festivities the eight participating Gulf countries in the 22nd Arabian Gulf Cup to be held Nov. 13 to 26 in the Saudi capital.

'Welcome to each one of you. Thank you for attending this gathering in connection with the 2014 Gulf Cup whose aim is to unify the people of the Gulf countries' he said in his welcome address.

Prince Turki bin Abdullah also thanked the sponsors which included Sabic STC and Almowaten.

The UAE was the last winner of the Arabian Gulf Cup which is held every two years in different Gulf countries.

Prince Turki bin Abdullah said that the Kingdom was honored for hosting the event in the capital city and expressed the hope that the visitors will enjoy their stay during the football tournament to be held at the King Fahd International Stadium and the King Faisal bin Fahd Stadium.

He also presented a shield to the representatives of the participating countries. Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Abdul Latif Al Zayani was also present on the occasion.

About 300 invited guests attended the function. They included government ministers ambassadors princes among others.

Local visitors from other parts of the Kingdom also attended the event . Jeddah-based Moneer Osama who's working for a media firm expressed happiness for attending.

'I have visited Riyadh many times in the past but tonight is different. Dignitaries could be seen in one place together which lends sobriety to the environment. The sight of burning dried trunk of trees to create warmth also looks something different' said Osama who hailed from Syria who said that he was feeling cold because of the climate.

The diplomats present on the occasion included Ambassadors Muhammed bin Zaid Al-Zahery of the UAE Hamoud bin Abdullah El Khalifa (Bahrain) Ahmed bin Hilal bin Saud bin Al-Buzaidi (Oman) Abdullah bin Themer El-Theni (Qatar) Themer Geber Al Ahmad Al Sabah (Kuwait) Ghanim Elwan El-Jemeily (Iraq) and Deputy Chief of Mission Zin Muhammed Al-Khoaithy (Yemen).
