~~HUNTINGTON BEACH Calif. Sept. 17 2014 --  Every day more of our wounded warriors are returning home from the battlefields to deal with their trauma physical and mental while trying to adjust to civilian life.   It is a scenario playing out in hometowns across America including Orange County.

That is why HBReads (www.hbreads.org) a Huntington Beach-based non-for-profit organization that promotes diversity through reading has chosen the New York best-selling book “Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him” by former Captain Luis Carlos Montalvan for its 2014-15 book promotion campaign.

Until Tuesday is the story of how two wounded warriors – a man and his dog – helped each other after each suffered the consequences of their own situations.

A highly decorated U.S. Army captain Montalvan had spent two challenging tours of duty in Iraq and upon returning home faced the immense pressures of his physical wounds traumatic brain injury and crippling post-traumatic stress disorder.   He soon found himself drinking too much arguing and cutting alienating his loved ones.  He was losing hope.

Then he met Tuesday a beautiful and sensitive golden retriever trained to assist the disabled.
The dog had lived among prisoners and at a home for troubled boys where he could turn on lights open doors and sense the onset of anxiety and flashbacks.    But because of his unique training situation and sensitive nature he found it difficult to trust or connect with a human being – until Luis.

According to one reviewer “Montalban writes with such clarity and self-awareness about the path he has taken to come to a better sense of peace with himself. And the elemental role Tuesday played as a companion as a protector as a way to stay grounded and present even though his body and his heart remember the stresses of battle so keenly.”

“We believe this book will touch the hearts of everyone in Huntington Beach especially those who have family friends classmates and acquaintences who have experiences with returning veterans” said Fred Provencher president and founder of HB Reads.
