Tentative Calm Prevails in Lebanon's Arsal

Cautious calm on Friday prevailed in the town of Arsal on the border with Syria after yesterday's clashes between the Lebanese army and militants belonging to different nationalities.

Security sources reported that the Lebanese army has tightened measures in the eastern Lebanese town of Arsal in anticipation of attacks by gunmen on its positions.

In a related development, a security source pointed out that the gunmen brought in reinforcements from Syria to the outskirts of Arsal in order to attack the army.

Lebanese Interior Minister Nihad Al-Mashnouq, in a statement after a meeting with Leader of the "Change and Reform" bloc MP Michel Aoun, described Arsal as a "ticking time bomb" hoping that a solution to the events of Arsal would be reached.

Clashes broke out on Thursday in the town of Arsal between the Lebanese army and militants belonging to various nationalities after an armed group from Daash organization and Al-Nusra Front intercepted an army patrol in Al-Rahwa area on the outskirts of the town.
