(MENAFN - Arab News) Pakistani consul general aftab ahmed khokher paid a warm tribute to urdu news on tuesday for its 20-year service to the readers of the urdu language.
the consul general appealed to the pakistani business community to promote the publication by increasing advertisements for the cause of the urdu language and for better coverage of news here and back home.
hundreds of expatriates and saudis attended the function which was organized by the pakistan business community (pbc) jeddah in a show of support to the urdu daily.
the function was also attended by tariq mishkhas editor in chief urdu news hani hazaimeh managing editor of arab news masood puri chairman pbc rohail khan chairman urdu academy international tayyab musani memons welfare society athar nafees abbasi president aalami urdu markaz and aziz ahmad one of the first members to join the urdu news editorial board.
khokher said 'urdu news is a major source of information for the urdu speaking readership and is also an important communication link to update them about government policies the rules and regulations and other information of relevance to the 2.3 million pakistani expatriates in the kingdom."
it is therefore important to support and strengthen not only urdu news but also its sister concern arab news for better coverage and sustained services for the cause of the pakistani expatriates in particular he said.
giving a befitting homage to his urdu daily and also to its vast readership tariq mishkhas who is a saudi won applause for his speech delivered in urdu.
in his brief address the urdu news editor in chief assured his commitment to serve the urdu readership by giving more coverage to their activities and grievances and also updating them of the happenings in the subcontinent.
pbc chairman puri rohail khan who later presented a memento to mishkhas on behalf of his academy and musani in their speeches paid plaudits to urdu news and praised mishkhas for his services in this regard.
puri termed the daily as an indispensable part of the expatriates' life in the kingdom. khan called it an institution of urdu which is the 4th largest spoken language in the world while musani urged for an urdu weekly magazine. the pbc also presented a memento to mishkhas in recognition of his services to urdu.
abbasi and zamurrad saifi took to poetry to pay tributes to the urdu daily and its editor in chief.
abdul bakar memon thanked the guests participants and attendees.
qari muhammad asif initiated the event with the recitation of the holy qur'an while ashfaq badayuni was the anchor at the function.
