Global reliance on nuclear energy drops

(MENAFN) Europe shows doubt in investing in nuclear energy sources as concerns rise regarding the costs of construction and operation as well as waste disposal, The National reported. The World Nuclear Industry Status Report (WNIR) for this year shows that global reliance on nuclear plants to generate power has fell to a 10 percent share of total energy produced down from 17 percent. The nuclear meltdown at Fukushima, Japan in March 2011 has ushered in a rapid decline in reliance on nuclear power. In 2011 alone, power coming from nuclear sources went down by 4 percent reaching a record low. Last year, power generated by nuclear plants slumped by 7 percent. Two months following the Fukushima incident, German Chancellor, Angela Merkel said that Germany will completely abandon energy from nuclear sources by 2022 and switch to renewable energy. France, whose energy is 80 percent produced through nuclear sources and the European Union's biggest energy exporter, decided to close down 24 of its reactors by 2025.
