Dubai traffic cops get device with camera

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  A new recording device with camera being used under a pilot programme by the Dubai Police will help pin down traffic law violators. The devices, a first in the country, can record and take videos and will be useful in gathering evidence. It is expected to ensure transparency, integrity, and completely eliminate complaints that are sometimes lodged by the public regarding methods used by police in handling traffic offenders. The police will inform the offending person that he would be videographed. In case the offender is a woman, the device's camera would be switched off and only the audio would be recorded. Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin said as per the instructions of Dubai Police Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant-General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim, the police introduce the latest technical devices to aid police work and try to deepen the concept of mutual respect between the police and the public by pursuing the principles of fairness and transparency. The Dubai Police now have brought in 10 devices in the first trial phase. The device that would be pinned to the policeman's uniform. The cop needs only to press the ignition key when he stops a person who has committed a traffic law violation and then the device starts recording the interaction between the two. Maj-Gen Al Zafin said some motorists who want to evade penalties sometimes claim that the policemen have offended them or treated them in an uncivilised manner. "When we quizz the cop and the complainant and ask for evidence, both cannot produce any evidence. And we cannot decide for sure whether any of them is exaggerating or lying," Maj-Gen Al Zafin said. The new device completely eliminates this chance. The recorded video could be checked for evidence. He said all police officers have been instructed to use the device when issuing tickets for traffic law violations on the spot and the policeman involved would be answerable if does not use the device despite having one with him. Maj-Gen Al Zafin said the Traffic Department introduces such initiatives to protect the interests and rights of both the offenders as well as other road users.
