24 Nov 2017

Day 1 of India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test ended with India at 11/1, losing KL Rahul's wicket.

Indian spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja worked their magic to limit the visitors to a below par score of 205 in their first innings, putting the men in blue in control of the match.

Let's look at how the match proceeded.

A 6th below-300 score for Sri Lanka

For a consecutive sixth Test between India and Sri Lanka, Lankans have failed to reach a score of 300.

Changes to the Indian side
Extra batsman

With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan released from playing and Mohammed Shami injured, the 2nd Test saw comebacks for players like Murali Vijay and Ishant Sharma who last played in March earlier this year.

Further Rohit Sharma, even with his inconsistent Test performance, got a chance in the playing XI. Inclusion of the sixth batsman has strengthened the already powerful Indian batting order.

Sri Lanka 1st innings
Bowlers' day out

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first in the 2nd Test at a green Nagpur wicket.

Indian bowlers had a good day at the office with Ishant Sharma picking up three wickets and spinners Ashwin and Jadeja taking 4 and 3 wickets respectively.

Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal (57) and opener Karunaratne (51) scored half centuries to contribute to their side's 205.

Karunaratne joins the 1000-run club

Dimuth Karunaratne became the second Lankan opener to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year apart from Sanath Jayasuriya (1997 and 2004). He is also the second batsman to score 1000-plus Test runs (23 innings) in 2017 after Dean Elgar (1097 in 20 innings).
