New Zealand studies new visa for climate 'refugees' from Pacific islands

(MENAFN)As world leaders gather in Germany to wrap up United Nations climate talks, the nation's new climate change minister said that New Zealand is suggesting a new refugee visa for Pacific Islanders who are migrating because of rising sea levels.

In the vulnerable Pacific islands, the number of people moving within their own nations to flee developing storms, sea level rise and other climate-related disasters is still somewhat small.

Countries like New Zealand however; are studying new plans now before climate migration grows into a humanitarian crisis.

"We want to get ahead of this before it turns into a real problem... we want to start a dialogue with the Pacific Island countries about this notion of migrating with dignity, if things get to that point." stated climate minister James Shaw, leader of New Zealand's Green Party.
