Russia holds US responsible for JIM standoff

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MOSCOW, Nov 17 (KUNA) -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation said Washington is to blame for the suspension of the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM).

"The United States and its allies in the UN Security Council failed to produce a balanced draft to the UNSC to renew the mandate of the JIM probing the incidents of using chemical weapons in Syria," according to a press release by the Ministry on Friday.

Russia is ready to engage in consultations to break the stalemate, it said, noting that the resumption of JIM operation will be important if lessons were learnt from previous experiences.

Two UNSC draft resolutions - one sponsored by the United States and another by Bolivia - were vetoed by Russia yesterday.

Moscow accused the Mechanism of impartiality and politicization in working out reports on the chemical weapons attacks in Syria, and urged introducing essential amendments to any future drafts.

In its resolution 2235 on August 7, 2015, the Security Council condemned "any use of any toxic chemical" in Syria and established the Mechanism. (end) as.gb
