Dubai expat helps child victims of Nepal earthquake

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) While the world has moved on from the 2015 Nepal disaster, one Dubai resident could not stop helping the child victims of the deadly earthquake.

In an effort to help their education, Asim Rai has collected more than 150 storybooks last month to donate to the lost children of Nepal.

He believes that education can also help fight against child labour, a crime that became too common after the earthquake. More than 16,000 people had died, over 20,000 were injured and thousands of people lost their homes in the earthquake.

The Nepalese resident said storybooks are a "great way" for kids to become creative and imaginative - skills that are needed in rural Nepal as many have lost hope, according to Rai.

"When I received the news that an earthquake had hit Nepal, I knew I had to help the survivors," Rai said, who works in Dubai as an art director. "I flew there and joined a group of volunteers. I also raised funds from Dubai to donate stationery kits, blankets and food to children who were continuing their studies in the tents.

"It was very important for me to keep helping the kids. Child labour is still strong in Nepal because of poverty. Though there are organisations working to end it, I wanted to do my part."

Rai collected 165 storybooks this year from Dubai. His friends and family donated books to his cause and he also received help from a library in Karama.

"Storybooks are a beautiful way to help the children be more imaginative, creative, and cultivate passion for reading. I hope to create the culture of reading and writing in Nepal as they are great tools for psychological development.

"If we provide children with effective tools, it will broaden their perspective and guide them to be global citizens. This is my third donation to the children of Nepal."
