New motorcycles have to pass technical inspection every year unlike new cars which have three years before they undergo the annual technical check up, said an official from technical inspection of the Traffic Department.
'Owners of motorcycles who need to renew their road permits (Istimara) have to undergo the regular annual technical inspection every year, while cars' Istimara can be renewed in the first three years without technical inspection, Captain, Mohammed Saeed Khaees said.
Many bikers are not satisfied with this new decision taken by the Traffic Department. At a panel discussion titled 'Motorcycles and Traffic Safety organized recently by the General Directorate of Traffic Department in collaboration with Qatar Centre for Motorcycles 'Batabit, motorcycle drivers raised their queries about the new procedures against motorcycles.
'I was surprised when I came to renew the road permit for my new motorcycle and traffic officials told me that it has to pass technical inspection, it was the first time to know this. One of the bikers pointed out during the panel discussion my motorcycle is new and should be treated same like the new cars which have to conduct the inspection after three years. What is difference between cars and motorcycles?
Replying to the question, Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Radi Al Hajri, Director of Media and Awareness, at the Traffic Department, said the department has no problem to study the issue and revise the decision and will take complaints into account and this is the aim of holding such a meeting.
Al Hajri also said that motorcycles which do not meet the Qatari standards and specifications are not allowed to get ‘Istimara' even if they are new.
Any new motorcycle which does not meet the standards and specifications will not be allowed to enter the country, he added, noting that some people are still importing motorcycles which do not meet requirementss.
