N-energy applications' development vital: Qatar

(MENAFN - Gulf Times) Qatar has stressed that the international community was counting on sustainable development, not only because of its benefits in terms of human well-being and environmental protection but also because it had become the essential element for restoring stability to societies and maintaining international peace and security.
In a statement delivered by Qatar's Ambassador to Austria and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim al-Thani, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) board of governors' meetings, Qatar praised the IAEA and its director general's support for scientific research and development activities at universities and research centres in Qatar, as the country adopts the option of nuclear energy as part of the energy mix in the future.
In its statement, Qatar called for greater attention to the development of nuclear energy applications, the promotion of international and regional co-operation in this field and the facilitation of access by developing countries to nuclear technologies and applications, stressing the central role of the IAEA in this context.
Ambassador Sheikh Ali bin Jassim al-Thani highlighted Qatar's appreciation of the efforts being exerted by the IAEA to modernise its nuclear applications laboratories in Seibersdorf, noting that Qatar has contributed 300,000 Euros to modernise those laboratories.
